Taxis may be the easiest way to get around a city, but they are also the most expensive, especially in a place like Paris. Moreover, Paris taxis may not be the fastest means of transportation either, as traffic is often hectic throughout the city. Taxis are most easily found at Metro stations, near busy roads, and at more than 400 taxi ranks throughout Paris. Not unlike the taxis in America, the luminous sign on the roof of the cab car informs you of whether or not a cab is on duty. However, most taxis are simply white or black "standard" vehicles that look like any other car, save the very little sign on the roof. Anyway, if the sign is illuminated, the taxi is available. Obviously, you must hail the cab, but do not hail moving taxis while in close proximity of a taxi rank, for the cars at the rank have priority over other taxis within a 50-meter radius. Generally, taxis are paid for in cash, a very few take credit cards as well. Standard gratuity is approximately 10 percent. There are three types of taxi fares. Rate A is a trip through Paris between 7am and 7pm except for Sundays and public holidays at a cost of FF3.36 per km. Rate B applies to journeys in Paris between 7pm and 7am and Sundays and public holidays, as well as daytime trips to the suburbs and to airports at a cost of FF5.45 per km. Rate C is for journeys to the suburbs and to airports between 7pm and 7am at a cost of FF7 per km. Pick up at station: FF5; 4th adult passenger: FF10; Luggage: FF6.
